The process for getting research funded can be intimidating. Although each project may be different, use this general grants checklist to help you to get started in getting your project externally funded.
Schedule a Consultation
To formally establish your research idea and start an outline for your project proposal, schedule a consultation with Grants Resources & Services.
Find Funding
GRS offers multiple resources to help you independently search funding databases for opportunities relating to your project topic.
Request a Sample Proposal
GRS provides sample proposals of successfully funded projects for reference.
Contact Department Chair
Talk to your department chair when you have identified a funding opportunity you would like to pursue, and keep him/her informed about any major changes in your project plans while you are writing the proposal.
Your chair and dean must officially approve your proposal in Cayuse before Sponsored Programs can submit it to the sponsor, and the approval process will move more quickly if your chair knows your plans.
Tips: It’s especially important to talk to your chair early in the proposal writing process if your proposed project involves time away from the classroom or a commitment of university resources (e.g., exhibit space), or if your sponsor requires matching funds or cost sharing.
Contact the Program Officer
Contacting a program officer to discuss your project is always a good idea. A telephone call or a short email can initiate a fruitful discussion. Use this sample letter (PDF) for reference.
Pull It All Together
Be sure to contact all of your collaborators and ensure all compliances are being met. Learn more about completing your proposal narrative and other application materials.
Prepare a Budget
Contact the Sponsored Programs staff member assigned to your department for assistance with budget development.
Submit to Cayuse
Submit a draft proposal in Cayuse at least 3 weeks before your sponsor’s deadline. Submit final proposals to Sponsored Programs at least 15 days before the sponsor’s deadline. This must be a complete, ready- to-submit proposal, including all required internal approvals.
